In this part of the course we shall study the effects of classical electromagnetic fields on the properties of quantum mechanical systems. In order to be able to describe the quantum effects, we first need to analyse the situation completely in classical mechanics. This may introduce some concepts some of you may not familiar with (especially the Lagrangian and Lagrange’s equation of motion). Most of these are easy to check for simple problems, but you may want to do some background reading if you find this difficult.
